Sunshine Wheat is a great beer for erasing thirst. Yet, it has attributes that induce more attention than just a hot summer day's consumption. Sunshine Wheat swirls in the mouth with ripples of coriander and orange peel tartness which settle nicely to a tranquil sea of apple and honey tones.
Centuries ago spices were added by Belgian brewers to mask unpleasant odors that occasionally arose from their beer-mostly because of the lack of refrigeration. Even over time as beer handling became more sophisticated, coriander (cilantro) seed and dried Curacao orange peel had become the recognized seasoning adjustments for this style of beer. New Belgium continues this tradition crafting a wheat beer with a spicy tart zing.
Good food pairings with Sunshine Wheat include; Mussels steamed in Sunshine Wheat, red bell peppers, orange, fresh cilantro, chili with black beans, Anaheim chilies, grilled corn, Arugula salad with grilled scallops, avocado, papaya and grapefruit vinaigrette.
Unlike German style wheat beers, it is almost repetitive to toss a lemon slice into Sunshine Wheat. If anything, a fresh orange slice garnish buddies up well with the orange peel spicing. Ornament or no ornament, absolutely be sure to pour Sunshine Wheat into a clear glass that exposes its silky pale gold color.
