  • Joseph Meens founded the Alfa brewery in Thull in 1870. Now in 2000 the brewery exists 130 years. Alfa is one of the few independent breweries in the Netherlands.

It all started in the very small town of Thull nearby Schinnen. Joseph Meens had a well on his property with clear water. He knew the possibilities so he started brewing in combination with his farming. We are in 1870. In the early years the beer was sold in bars from nearby towns. It would take 90 years for a change. It wasn't until 1960 that the beer was brewed for drinking at home.

Now the packaging and storage of the beer is fully automated. With laser techniques each bottle is numbered with an unique number. But the brewing process and the recepi is almost the same. Brewing is still done by hand and in small batches. The recipe is checked by the employees of the brewery. And every Friday afternoon the brews of the last week are evaluated. Alfa still uses natural products. And the water from the well is still as clean as 130 years ago. Alfa beer is brewn solely with water from the well. That is why Alfa beer is limited brewed, to protect the well and not to exhaust it.
