NV Brouwerijen Alken-Maes

The Alken-Maes history goes back to 1880 when egied Maes buys the brouwerij Sint-Michaël brewery in Waarloos. In 1881 Arthur Boes starts the Brouwerij Sint-Aldegondis brewery in Alken. In 1923 he founds the NV Brouwerij van Alken together with Jozef Indekeu.
The Maes brewery joins the international British group Watney Mann in 1969. In 1978 the Maes brewery takes over the L'Union te Jumet (Grimbergen) brewery. In 1988 the breweries Alken and Maes join together and form the Alken-Maes brewery. Anglo-Belge the brewer of the Zulte and Judas beers is taken over by the Alken-Maes brewery in 1988 as well. In 1989 Alken-Maes takes a 50% interest in the Brouwerij De Keersmaeker (Mort Subite) brewery in Kobbegem. In 1994 the Alken-Maes brewery is fully integrated into the Danone group. Brasserie Demarche (Ciney) and Brugs are taken over in 2000. Also the remaining 50% of the Brouwerij de Keersmaeker brewery are acquired. Alken-Maes and Scottish & Newcastle join in 2000 as well.
