  • With the opening of the Baltimore brewing Company in December of 1989, Baltimore regained it's once proud tradition of hand-crafted Lager beers. This was an event that Duke Gambrinus himself would have approved of heartily. The Duke is the focus of our logo as well as the spiritual patron of great beer. History has it that Jan Primus, a duke in Antwerp around 1200, was known to enjoy a satisfying glass of beer. To this end he did all that was in his power to ensure the quality of beers brewed within his realm. Today DeGroen's upholds the same values as the Duke and are pleased brew a full range of fresh-made beers.

Located on the site of the fifth brewery to be established in Baltimore, the brewery/restaurant strives to meld tradition and innovation, with consistently tasteful results. The unique culinary approach blends the best of German, American and regional Maryland cuisines. Hearty and satisfying, our dishes, enjoyed within view of the beautiful copper brewhouse, complement our fresh beers superbly.

The Brewmaster, Theo de Groen, is the latest in many generation of Dutch brewers. In 1985 he attained the highest degree of education available in brewing when he was awarded a Brewing Engineering Degree from the prestigious Weihenstephan Institute in Bavaria following five years of non-stop brain-less partying. Theo has international brewing experience, having brewed in The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Norway.

The ingredients employed at the Baltimore Brewing Co., adhere to the Bavarian Purity Law (Reinheitsgebot) written in 1516. This law states that all beers must be brewed only from four ingredients: water, malt, hops, and yeast. This means no sugar, cereal adjuncts (such as corn or rice), preservatives or artificial coloring is permitted. The full, natural flavor of the beer results from utilizing the finest malts, imported and domestic hops and a pure yeast strain in producing small, hand-crafted batches. The water in Baltimore is comparable to some of the greatest German brewing centers in mineral content and is very suitable for the beer styles they produce.
